Editor’s note: The following update on initiatives by “March for our Lives” was submitted by Charlotte County Young Democrats Chair Daniel Schwarz

Following the horrific shooting tragedies in El Paso and Dayton, it felt like our lawmakers were finally willing to strengthen our pathetically weak gun laws. Tough talk by President Trump and
other elected officials proved to be a bluff, underscoring the inaction of our government on such a serious public health crisis.
While our government officials have proven themselves
weak in the face of the powerful gun lobby, the young people behind March For Our Lives have been unwavering in the face of pressure. In fact, they have just released a plan to dramatically
change gun laws and gun culture in America.
This bold new plan is appropriately entitled ”A Peace Plan For A Safer America.” Below is a list of some of the bold initiatives
- “National Gun Licensing Registry”
- 10 Day-Waiting Period
- Background Check
- In-Person Interviews
- “Federal Ban on Assault Weapons And High Capacity Magazines”
- “National Gun Buyback And Disposal Program”
- “Creation of A National Gun Violence Prevention Director”
- The goal of Reducing Firearms Deaths and Injuries By At Least 50% Over 10 Years
- Provide Federal Funding To Urban Cities
- End Gun Violence At The Local Level
- “Repeal Protection Of Lawful Commerce In Arms Act”
