All Women’s Freedom of Choice Endangered

Florida’s legislative session begins January 14. One bill that will be heard and voted on when the session convenes would require notarized parental consent for minors (under age 18) to obtain abortions. HB 265 and SB/CS 404 would add a requirement that minors must obtain parent or guardian’s consent to have an abortion. Florida law already requires that minors notify (not get consent from) parents or guardians before an abortion. This bill violates the state’s constitutional right to privacy and is meant to play to the Republican Party’s base during this election year. The bill, if passed, could impact ALL women, not just minors. How? It would negate a 1989 Florida Supreme Court decision that assured freedom of reproductive choice regardless of what the U.S. Supreme Court may decide if Roe v. Wade was over-turned. So, if this bill is signed into law, Florida women will be left with no protection should Roe be over-turned. One sponsor of the bill, Sen. Dennis Baxley, R-Ocala, implied that abortion is a means to replacing Americans of European ancestry with a “new society.” Sounds like white supremacy doctrine, does it not? What can you do? Ask anyone and everyone to call their representative to vote NO on this dangerous bill. Minor girls may be victims of incest or rape and could live in homes where an unwanted pregnancy may be met with violence. Rep. Grant 941-613-0914 Sen. Albritton 863-534-0073
