Allen Ellison, the Sebring Democrat who took on the District 17 race during the closing days of the 2018 campaign, says he will run for Congress again in 2020. Speaking at Monday evening’s meeting of the Charlotte Co. Democratic Executive Committee, Ellison declared his candidacy for the US House district that includes all of Hardee, Desoto, Highlands, Okeechobee, Glades and Charlotte counties and portions of Polk, Manatee, Hillsborough and Lee counties.
Ellison was selected to carry the Democratic banner for District 17 in the closing days of the 2018 race following the untimely death of April Freeman. Although Ellison’s name did not appear on the ballot, he drew more than 117-thousand votes against Republican Greg Steube who won with 193-thousand votes.
Ellison is the first Democrat to declare his intention to run in District 17. The Charlotte County Democratic Party does not endorse any candidate over another until after the Primary election.
Ellison will be among the featured speakers at the Charlotte County Democratic Party’s Blue Gala on April 13th. Tickets for the event can be purchased here.
