On the back of a strong jobs report for the month of May, President Joe Biden and the Democratic Congress are delivering on the promise of rebuilding the US economy after the Trump administration’s failed response to the Covid-19 pandemic brought about the largest economic collapse in history.
The over 550,000 new jobs added bring the total for the last four months to over two million, more than at any previous point in history. Long term unemployment saw the greatest decline in a decade, as the overall rate continues to close in on pre-pandemic levels.
However, unemployment among African Americans and Hispanics trails other groups, indicating the need for continued efforts to build back a better and more equitable jobs market.
“It’s clear President Biden’s agenda is working, and Democrats will not be taking their foot off the gas. As we continue to see progress, we must build on it and pass the American Jobs Plan and American Families Plan to build lasting, long term success for our country.” said Alexandra Caffrey, spokesperson for the Florida Democratic Party. She also noted that while the Democrats in Washington “delivered key relief” to millions of Florida’s families and businesses, “Republicans in the state legislature refused to pass any significant pandemic relief.”
87% of Floridians received desperately needed funds from the American Rescue Plan, for which not a single Senate Republican voted, including our own Rick Scott and Marco Rubio. Marco Rubio is up for re-election in 2022.
