Charlotte County Democrats grieve with the families and community of Uvalde, Texas mourning the senseless killing of 19 children and 2 teachers at Robb Elementary School.
The shooting at Robb Elementary School is sadly the latest incident in an endemic of mass violence plaguing our country. While many Floridians hoped the 2018 killing of 17 students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas would mark a turning point in our country’s battle with gun violence, four years later no meaningful change has taken place due to Republicans refusal to take up gun reform legislation.
“Senseless killings like what happened at Robb Elementary in Uvalde and at the Tops grocery store in Buffalo are not inevitable – our elected leaders have the power to pass laws to ensure this never happens again,” said Teresa Jenkins, Chair of the Charlotte County Democratic Party. “The reason there has been no meaningful gun-control legislation following these shootings is the GOPs adamant refusal to cross the gun lobby and its extremist base. There is death all around us, but for too many Republicans, it is a sad inconvenience rather than impetus for action.”
