Charlotte County Women’s Rally: get mad, get active, get even

By Linda Porterfield, Charlotte County Dems writer

Join Charlotte County Democrats and all women who are mothers, daughters, children and the men who support them on Saturday, October 17th from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon at our headquarters, 3596 Tamiami Trail, Port Charlotte, Florida for a rally protesting the administration’s assault on women.  Music and food will be available.  Masks and social distancing required. Register for this event here.

This is your opportunity to:

Get Mad.  The administration plans to use the stacked Supreme Court (with a newly seated Amy Coney Barrett) to finally terminate the Affordable Care Act (ACA) during a raging pandemic. Such a horrific assault on the ACA will not only take away health care for over 20 million people but pave the way for insurance companies to charge women higher, largely unaffordable rates based upon gender alone! Pregnancy will become an uncovered pre-existing condition and any resulting complications from COVID-19 recovery will not be covered.  Your children in college who need the coverage of your insurance policy until age 26 will no longer be protected.  What happens if they become ill?

And, it gets even worse.

If this anti-feminist administration succeeds with the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, your hard-won right to choose provided by Roe v. Wade will very likely go away. How will you feel when this administration takes control of your body and even shares this control with your employer by prohibiting coverage of birth control in employer-sponsored health plans?

Feminism has always insisted on fairness and opportunity in education, environmental justice, employment, housing, civil rights and health care. Previous victories pertaining to these rights will be further diluted and even destroyed if the Supreme Court swings further right with the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett…a woman who obtained her own current stature largely due to the hard-fought battles of Ruth Bader Ginsberg and her supporters.

This is a woman who will be confirmed by male Republican senators sparing no time or willingness to vote for any legislation protecting you during a raging pandemic, when health care has become a backbone of our deteriorating economy, yet they can hardly contain their enthusiasm to return to Washington to vote for a judge who will take it away!

If voted out on November 3rd, perhaps these senators will find time to wait in line with other unemployed Americans for whom they could not find time to support.

Oh, the irony and hypocrisy of it all!

Get ActiveJoin us for the rally on October 17th.  If you aren’t already mad as hell you should be.  We will have signs protesting these issues for you to carry or you can make your own signs announcing issues near and dear to your heart.  Bring your moms, husbands, daughters, sons and friends.  This is too important for the future of women’s rights to sit on the sidelines.  But please wear a mask.

We will be loud, strong and determined.

Get EvenVote Blue on November 3rd all the way down the ballot. This election is not about selecting a president and a congressional representative.  It is about protecting democracy and preserving the rights and equality of women accomplished through decades of struggle.

We have so much to lose. But never without a fight! Join us on October 17th at 10:00 am.
