Editor’s note: The following letter was sent on September 24, 2021 by our Charlotte County Dems Chair, Teresa Jenkins, to Dr. Zachariah P. Zachariah, Chair, Florida Board of Medicine to protest the appointment of Dr. Joseph Ladapo by Governor Ron DeSantis as Florida’s next surgeon general. She awaits his response.
Dear Dr. Zachariah,
Dr. Joseph Ladapo, MD, PhD, has been appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis as Florida’s surgeon general. Dr. Ladapo is a physician and health policy researcher at UCLA and is now under a two-year contract with the University of Florida.
The Florida Board of Medicine’s mission is to “…monitor, discipline, educate, and when appropriate, rehabilitate physicians and other practitioners to ensure their fitness and competence in the service of the people of Florida.”
Dr. Ladapo’s statements about COVID-19, his spreading of disinformation, discouragement of vaccinations, and his promotion of unproven and deadly treatments for COVID should be sufficient to bar him from serving as the operational head and senior spokesperson on public health for the state of Florida. His essays undermine mask-wearing, spread anti-vaccine conspiracy theories, and promote phony COVID “cures” such as hydroxychloroquine, which also erode public trust and puts citizens and patients at risk.
Dr. Ladapo’s so-called “herd immunity” strategy is not only dangerous but completely unsupported by scientific evidence. The Infectious Diseases Society of America and the HIV Medicine Association already “strongly denounced” the herd immunity strategy, saying it comes “without data or evidence.”
Dr. Ladapo should be subject to suspension or revocation of his medical licenses because he continues to sow distrust within the medical community. He is using his professional status to deliberately mislead doctors and patients for reasons of politics as Florida has recorded at least 3,517,177 confirmed COVID cases and 51,889 deaths since the pandemic began.
We ask that you act against this unethical medical doctor who is intentionally generating and repeating false allegations and undermining an urgent public health response in Florida.
Chair, Charlotte County Democratic Party
