Charlotte Young Democrat talks about his trip to Tallahassee

by Daniel Schwarz, Charlotte County Young Democrats

I recently had the privilege to go to Tallahassee for the Florida Young Democrats Lobby Days. I was able to speak to legislators and meet fellow young Democrats from around the State of Florida. We were able to see how the Young Democrats empower young people to become more engaged in politics by fostering strong leadership skills. During our trip, we were able to speak with Fl State Representatives and Senators who shared some insight into what happens in Tallahassee.

What I found out is that our politics here in Florida are broken. We need to elect more Democrats into state and local office. Republicans can wield a lot of power without much resistance due to the reality that Democrats are the minority party in the legislature.

An impactful aspect to the trip was the sense of comradery between the Young Democrats. It is inspiring to see so many different people connected by shared values. Everyone understood that the only way to make a change is to work together. This makes me hopeful that Young Democrats are going to step up to the plate and become future leaders in our communities across the state.

I learned so much from the other Young Democrats, like the Manasota Young Dems and I’m ready to bring this new insight back to Charlotte County and help foster new leaders in our community.
