DWC and DEC offer scholarships to 2023 Charlotte County graduates

By Kay Blue – dwcofcharlottecounty@gmail.com

Do you know a talented young woman who will be graduating from the Charlotte County Public School System this year?  If so, please encourage her to apply for the Charlotte County Democratic Womens Club (DWC) and Democratic Executive Committee (DEC ) college scholarships.

The DWC is offering two $1000 scholarships in memory of Betty Gissendanner and Sonia Waters.  The DEC is offering a $500 scholarship in recognition of former Charlotte County faculty member Deven Seibert who courageously took students to a school board meeting to discuss bullying of gay students in light of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill.  She was targeted by other people at the meeting and harassed into resigning.

The scholarship applicants must be female and registered or preregistered Democrats.  Students can register or preregister through Charlotte County’s Supervisor of Elections Office at soecharlottecountyfl.gov or by calling 941-833-5400.  The applications are available from the guidance counselors in all of Charlotte County’s high schools, b0th brick and mortar and virtual.  The deadline to apply is March 1st.

To Donate to the Scholarship Fund make checks payable to DWC Scholarship Fund and deliver or mail to:  Judith Orlowski, DWC Treasurer, 1181 Dewhurst St, Port Charlotte, FL  33952.
