We should not overlook the fact that the strict abortion laws recently passed in several states were the doing of the President and Vice President of the United States.
We are witnessing the willful destruction of the institutions that are key to the health and well being of women and families and also to that of our economy and our democracy.
Getting overlooked is the multitude of actions the president has taken on women’s health around the globe and here in the U.S.
Immediately after the Women’s March in 2017, the president signed an Executive Order to cut off access to contraception to vast numbers of women, particularly in Africa, and curb access to cancer screenings.
In the U.S., the Trump administration has led attacks on Title X (federal family planning programs), sex education, family planning and women’s health protections guaranteed by Obamacare, and on access to health coverage and care.
There is no state in the country where support for banning abortion reaches even 25 percent. (Data for Cooperative Congressional Election Studies). However, Republicans have been aggressively curbing access to abortion and the cumulative effect of Republican policies is to force poor people to have more children than they want or believe they can afford, then tell them and their children that they’re own their own.
But women have awakened – the president has become the great uniter as evidenced by spontaneous actions across the country. Women are fed up with men deciding what’s best for every woman as if all women are in the same boat.
What you can do now is donate to your local Democratic Party to help elect lawmakers who value and respect a woman’s right to choose. Volunteer as a clinic escort at the SW Florida Women’s Clinic on 21178 Olean Blvd. While abortions bans are a big setback, the fight for women’s rights must go on.
