The following Letter to the Editor was published in The Daily Sun on Jan 7, 2023.
I am woke. And I am proud of it. The definition of woke according to the Merriam Webster English Language Dictionary is, “aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice).”
Justice, especially racial and social justice, must not be denied. The just treatment of individuals is at the very heart of a caring society. Moreover, if you happen to be religious and subscribe to the teachings of the Bible, “Justice, Justice shall you pursue,” is laid out plain to read in Deuteronomy 16:20.
I am woke because I care about my fellow citizens.
I am woke because I care about social justice.
I am woke because I want to see everyone respected regardless of their origin, gender, or the color of their skin.
I am woke because I believe books and discussion topics should not be banned.
I am woke because I believe that all of American history must be taught, not just those parts that some declare suitable.
I am woke because I believe in a woman’s right to manage her own body.
I care about my fellow Floridians, and it grieves me that the likes of DeSantis, Rubio and Steube behave as though they only care about some Floridians, those who are like-minded.
You better believe that I am woke and I am proud of it!
