Voter Registration and Town Hall discussion scheduled for Tuesday, June 26, as part of MFOL “Road To Change” tour.
“For us, the ‘Road To Change’ is the next step in our journey to empowering people across the country,” said MFOL student organizer Delany Tarr, age 17. “It’s a chance to connect with people, young people, in so many different communities. To learn from them, but also to show them what we know; to show them how important it is to get involved in your community.”
The MFOL student organizers will start their day in Charlotte County with voter registration at Laishley Park from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Free water, music and tunes will be provided for anyone who comes and registers.
The student organizers will then host a town hall meeting with local student leaders, government candidates and officials at the Punta Gorda United Congregational Church of Christ at 5:30 p.m. Attendees at the town hall can ask the panel questions about gun violence and student activism.
Road To Change is a tour around the country and the congressional districts of Florida. After Marjory Stoneman Douglas (MSD) High School in Parkland, Florida, fell victim to a school shooter in February, MSD students organized the March For Our Lives against gun violence that became the largest student-led march on Washington.
Now, those same student organizers are touring to spread the values of MFOL, to register people to vote, to educate citizens on gun violence and youth activism and to encourage citizens to vote on election day. They seek to bring an end to gun violence and connect with students and activists across Florida. “We have the power to truly have a say in what happens in our country, and this tour can show people how to use it,” said Tarr.
Charlotte County, on the west side of the 17th congressional district, will be their stop in the district. Many of the student organizers coming are MSD alumni and students.
