On Rainy Memorial Day Weekend, Students remember shooting victims

PUNTA GORDA, Saturday – On the banks of the Peace River, a handful of demonstrators, including four standing before body bags, marked the latest fatal school shootings.

The memorial was held in Gilchrist Park, where two months earlier some 1,100 demonstrators gathered to protest the killing of 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, FL. This weekend, the demonstration was mostly silent except for the reading of the names of those killed in last week’s shooting in Santa Fe, Texas. Twenty-three school shootings have happened in the 21 weeks since the first of the year.

No reporters from local news media covered the Memorial Day Weekend demonstration. Student leader, Lianna Hubbard, vowed to continue protesting as long as necessary.
