OPINION: Publix is thwarting action on plastic pollution

Gainesville and several other cities in Florida recently rescinded bans on various throwaway plastics, reversing course after pressure and the threat of lawsuits from the Florida Retail Federation, which receives significant funding from Publix.

This is a blow to communities in Florida, our oceans and waterways, and the marine animals that depend upon a healthy environment. Protecting the state’s rivers, lakes, springs, beaches and marine animals is incredibly important to Floridians and Florida’s massive tourism economy.
