Planned Parenthood Speaks to DWC

Nan Morgan of Planned Parenthood Sarasota spoke at the July 8 meeting of the Democratic Women’s Club.  She informed members about the four main missions of the organization:  providing health services, advocating for reproductive rights, providing educational programs, and promoting research and the advancement of technology in reproductive health care along with understanding their implications.

Patient services include a breadth of care from basic care to reproductive care and transgender care.  Morgan described the levels and types of health care services available in this region.  She explained many of the implications of Florida’s decision not expand Medicaid and informed the audience about Planned Parenthood’s policies regarding free care and the acceptance of private insurance.

Her presentation included a lively discussion about sex education and the lack thereof in Florida Public Schools and anticipated legislative barriers to abortion choices, similar to legislation enacted in states such as Georgia and Mississippi.   Morgan encouraged members to get active, indicating that Planned Parenthood had resources to help with advocacy and education efforts.  She encouraged DWC members to actively promote comprehensive sex education and pro-choice programs by contacting school board members and legislators, writing letters to editors, and voting.
