On May 4, the Charlotte County Democratic Executive Committee hosted a Zoom conference with Professor Melvin (Mel) Goodman, author of American Carnage: The Wars of Donald Trump; professor at the National War College and Johns Hopkins University; and senior fellow at the Center for International Policy. Over 50 members and guests were in attendance.
Professor Goodman addressed the damage the current administration has done to the military and intelligence communities. He noted that the administration’s horrifically incompetent response to the coronavirus and casting blame on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and China are endangering the U.S.
Professor Goodman spoke about the president’s purge of our nation’s inspectors general as a crisis with direct impact on the health and safety of all Americans, as well as the democratic protections that keep us from slipping into corruption.
The current series of direct attacks on statutory oversight makes it clear that the president remains committed to withholding the truth from the American people as he purges anyone that makes his administration look bad.
For Mr. Trump, there may be no greater betrayal than being the bearer of uncomplimentary news about his administration making accountability all but impossible.
The president’s lies and attacks on science and scientists are dangerous in ordinary times; now with a pandemic killing thousands each day, the need to ensure this president is not re-elected becomes more urgent.
