South Gulf Cove holds a Get Out the Vote (GOTV) get-together

Submitted by Janice Ippolito.

On Thursday evening, we held the first-ever Democratic get-together in South Gulf Cove.  Through the efforts of Richard Patrick, Precinct Captain in District 77, and with the assistance of Crystal Evans and Karen Zussman, they reached out by postcards to the Voting List of Hot Dems to attend this meeting.  There were almost 50 people who showed up.  Diane Drewry assisted at the sign-in desk.  The HOA Clubhouse has been renovated since the last election.

With chairs in a semi-circle, Mr. Patrick addressed the group as their Precinct 77 Captain.  Mr. Patrick is a lawyer who lived in the DC political arena.  Crystal Evans followed with some stress-relieving thoughts to keep Dem frustration in check.  We all watch the news and get tired of the falsehoods and outrageous behavior of the Republicans in the state of Florida. We all need to learn to decompress.  Crystal is a retired school psychologist.

The next speaker was our new District Captain, Barbara LaCorte, who further explained the GOTV plans for the next few months.  If a person signs up for a ballot to Vote by Mail (VBM) before the election, Dems realize a 95% ballot return in the election.  Call the Supervisor of Election at 941-833-5400 or online at  https://www.soecharlottecountyfl.gov/Registration/Check-my-registration to be sure your VBM status is up to date.  The good news for canvassers, we will be switching from door-to-door efforts to telephone calls during the hot summer months.

Janice Ippolito, Chairperson of the Environmental Caucus and resident of South Gulf Cove gave an overview of upcoming Democratic events listed on Charlottedems.com/events.  May is a busy month for Charlotte Dems.  The DEC meets Monday night May 2nd, the Environmental Caucus is meeting in person on Tuesday afternoon at 1:30pm and the  agenda includes making signs for the Rally for Affordable Housing that same day. We will leave the office at  3596 Tamiami Trail, Suite 202 in Port Charlotte, FL and head down to the Old Historic Courthouse in Punta Gorda in time for the 4:30 rally.

Then on Thursday evening, May 5th , Cinco de Mayo,  at 4:30pm, we have the Englewood Drinking Liberally event at the End Zone on 776.  The Democratic Women’s Club is meeting on Monday, May 9th at 2 pm. The CC Dem Club meets on Saturday morning, May 14th  where the speaker will be our new Vice Chairman Paul Platt (tbc) to speak about the “History of the US Presidency.”  Drinking Liberally will be held in Punta Gorda on May 19th at 4:30 at TT Tiki bar.  What an exciting month of events!  Please go to Charlottedems.com/events for specifics and to sign up for any and all  events.

We followed with pizza and snacks and sandwiches prepared by Karen Zussman. We had no crashers.  It was calm and informative and we have set the stage for this crew to volunteer for more .  Thank you to everyone who was involved.  It was a huge success.
