Trump’s second term would be a dictatorship

The following Letter to the Editor was published in The Daily Sun on Dec 15, 2023.

Fox News personality Sean Hannity recently asked Presidential candidate Donald Trump, “Do you in any way have any plans whatsoever if reelected president to abuse power, to break the law, to use the government to go after people?” Trump evaded the question, so Hannity asked again. “Under no circumstances—you are promising America tonight—you would never abuse power as retribution against anybody?” he asked. “Except for day one,” Trump responded.

At the same time, former US House Representative Liz Cheney was promoting her new book, “Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning,” on Rachel Maddow’s MSNBC show. Cheney warned viewers about Trump’s intentions: “He would take those people who are the most radical, the most dangerous, who had the proposals that were the most dangerous, and he will put them in positions of supreme power.”

And, in fact, this is exactly the plan outlined in the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025, which calls for giving the President absolute power over the executive branch and a radical remaking of the federal government under the leadership of a hand-picked cadre of extremist Republicans. Trump is not joking or teasing. He means to extract revenge on his political enemies and establish himself as the authoritarian ruler of the United States.

Per the Forbes Newsletter, 3.15 million viewers watched the Cheney interview as opposed to 1.9 million for Trump’s interview.

Perhaps people are, finally, paying attention.
