The following Letter to the Editor was published in The Daily Sun on Oct 7, 2023.
I was in the U.S. Navy from 1962 to 1965. During 1964 and 1965, I served on board a ship in a special NATO group with sailors from the United Kingdom, Germany, Netherlands, Italy and Greece. We were the only military whose country had not been bombed and large numbers of civilians killed. Even the youngest of them knew the horror of war and appeasement.
When we would talk about WWII their opinion was that the collective “WE” should never have appeased Hitler and that had he been stopped earlier much of the death and destruction that occurred would never have happened.
Once again, the world is faced with a dictator, but this time it’s Vladimir Putin. We absolutely need to support Ukraine. The U.S. has already delayed weapons and financial support and now we have politicians, who for some reason that I can’t understand, think let’s just “cut bait” on supporting Ukraine. Please, please support Ukraine.
Write and call your congressional and senatorial representatives. We can’t afford to abandon Ukraine.
