The Charlotte County Democratic Party continued making history during this 2018 election year. An example is “a first time for Charlotte County” Oct. 30 “Bring It Home” campaign tour stop at St. Mary’s Primitive Baptist Church in Punta Gorda by Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum with candidate Chris King (lieutenant governor), candidates Allen Ellison (Congressional District 17) and Olivia Babis (Senatorial District 23).

The cooperative effort between the CCDEMS, St Mary’s Primitive Baptist Church officials, SWFL and Englewood Indivisible groups ensured turnout numbers exceeded expectations. The capacity overflow was estimated to be over 500 enthusiastic voters listening, cheering and supporting the Gillum campaign.

This was the CCDEMs second major candidate event in 2018. In July, during the primary election “Politics in the Park” event, voters met with the Democratic candidates running for state and local offices. Three caucuses were established, environmental, veterans and Hispanic, facilitating voter outreach throughout the county. Voters appreciate the outreach, talk about candidates and issues.

It is incumbent upon all of us to be involved in the voting process, discuss differences rationally, find commonality, not dismiss these beliefs as mere words: “All men are created equal,” “All are endowed with certain unalienable rights,” “for the people, of the people, and by the people,” “liberty and justice for all,” and “E Pluribus Unum (out of many, one). This is who we are.
