Students strike to protest global climate change

by Victor Coscia

“Why spend the time going to school to learn if there will no planet left for us to live on when we get out?”

This is a quote from Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old from Stockholm Sweden who walked out of classes several years ago to protest climate change. She was later joined by several of her classmates and what started out as an isolated incident has turned into a worldwide event.

To reduce her personal carbon footprint, Greta has become a vegan and she does not fly. So that she could carry her message to America, she dramatically crossed the Atlantic Ocean on a solar-powered hybrid sailboat.

The Global Climate Strike will take place Friday, September 20, 2019. This is an event in which students will leave class to bring awareness to the science they feel is so important.

In support of their efforts, the Charlotte County Democratic Environmental Caucus plans to demonstrate outside the Historic Court House, 226 Taylor Street Punta Gorda from 4:00pm to 6:00 PM. We are inviting all to come to join us.

You can bring a sign, bring your passion, but certainly bring yourself. We need to show these young people that they are not alone in this fight. There is no Planet B.
