Marco Rubio says unborn child’s rights should prevail over mother’s rights

Editor’s note:  Protect women’s reproductive health services and  family privacy. Elect Val Demings as our US Senator on November 8th.

Marco Rubio once again doubled down on his support for extremist abortion bans during a recent campaign event. After telling Floridians earlier this week that he favors abortion bans with no exceptions for rape and incest and even supports bans starting “at the moment of conception,” Rubio went farther to attack women’s rights to make their own health care decisions.

As WPLG reported, Rubio said that pregnant women’s rights are less important than their unborn children’s, opening the door to policies that would criminalize women who seek abortions. He also called supporting access to safe and legal reproductive health care “insanity,” even though a strong majority of Floridians support it.

Key points:

  • “Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, brought his re-election campaign back to South Florida Thursday, speaking to a group of Christian clergy in Davie. The incumbent senator, running against Democratic challenger Rep. Val Demings, had plenty to say about abortion.”
  • “‘I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again on this issue, because it’s so fundamental, life. I would rather be right and lose an election than wrong,’ Rubio said.”
  • “An outspoken opponent of abortion, Rubio said the unborn child’s rights should prevail over the mother’s.”
